The Fundamentals of Freedom

Life is hard.

The last few years in particular feel like they’ve really taken their toll.

Generally speaking as a people, we’ve become less tolerant, we have less energy, and the mood is more sombre.

We are showing signs of age and weariness, where perhaps once there was youthful exuberance.

The smiles have eroded and increasingly replaced with frowns.

And it’s no surprise. Everything but the kitchen sink has been thrown at us – rocketing costs, constant bad news, death and destruction.

And that’s just on a global scale.

Never mind the personal challenges we may have faced along the way.

We’ve had no choice but to adapt and absorb it all.

It is a testament to our mental strength and resilience that we can still keep going despite these battles.

Want Freedom? Start here

Alhamdulillah. Allah has given us all the ability to endure, to have sabr and persevere through the pain.

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “I am amazed by the believer. Verily, Allah does not decree anything for the believer except what is good for him.”

Musnad Ahmad 12906

We know we are going from this crisis to the next for a reason. And we remain patient and steadfast because of it.

There’s a great quote that always inspires me – even when things sometimes seem too tough.

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”

Victor Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning

I love this quote as it really encapsulates what mindset we as Muslims should adopt at all times.

There may be things going on around us that we can’t control… but we can control our attitude and how we act in such times.

No one, not Firaun, the government, the King, or even Shaytaan can take this away from you.

They, of course, may plot and plan and try to do this.

But we hold the key to our own freedom.

Freedom is something that is very central to what I do and what I believe – and the ability to choose your attitude is one of the biggest freedoms of all.

And it all starts there.

Build this foundation as your fundamental and the rest will follow, insha’allah.
